KU Killara Park Preschool has been engaging with Uncle Laurie, an Aboriginal elder from the Guringai tribe, whose people have a connection with the land on which the preschool resides.
Uncle Laurie carved a totem of a rock wallaby into sandstone, with children having the opportunity to observe, discuss and be involved in the process. He also performed a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony at the preschool, with families attending to share in the experience.
“The children’s engagement and connection with Uncle Laurie has enabled them to learn and develop an appreciation for our land, its people and indigenous history,” said KU Killara Park Director, Katrina Hendry.
