KU Berowra Preschool recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, commemorating half a century of providing high-quality early childhood education and care as part of KU Children’s Services (KU) since its establishment in 1974.
The event attracted multi-generational families and educators who have been integral to the preschool’s long history. Among the attendees was Nathan Tilbury, the Deputy Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council, who was one of the first children to attend KU Berowra Preschool in the 1970s. Nathan shared his appreciation for the preschool and reminisced about his childhood experiences as a child there.
The celebration also welcomed Alison Melloh, who was a driving force behind establishing KU Berowra Preschool. She was joined by her children, Doug and Catherine, both of whom attended the preschool and are featured in a 1974 newspaper article alongside Deputy Mayor Nathan Tilbury. (Below)
Also present was Brian Engert, who proudly served as Vice President on the Berowra KU Parent Committee in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The celebration opened with an Acknowledgement of Country by KU Berowra Director Zoe Mizzi, and facilitated by KU’s Education and Quality Manager Marie Nijssen, followed by speeches from Nathan Tilbury and KU’s CEO Christine Legg. Each speaker highlighted the significant history of the preschool and its impact on the community.

“We are incredibly proud of KU Berowra Preschool and the partnership it has built with families, educators, and the wider community over generations. Reaching its 50th anniversary is a significant achievement. To see some of the founding community members, the generations that have attended over the years, along with today’s families and staff, underscores the value and impact of high-quality early childhood education in local communities.”
