Miss Helen Newton, KU Life Member, passed away recently after a long illness at the age of 91.
Helen Newton was a significant leader in the ECE sector for many years and she played an important role in KU's history being a Director at KU Rushcutters Bay Preschool, a KU Advisor and an academic at the Sydney Kindergarten Teachers College, operated by KU (then called the Kindergarten Union of NSW).
In 1969, Helen was appointed as the first Director of the new Child Study Centre which was an integral part of the Teachers College. The Child Study Centre was at the time an innovative model which provided teaching resources and was used as ‘a living laboratory' type of demonstration teaching experience for ECE students and visiting academics.
After her retirement, Miss Newton remained active in ECE for many years and in her later years continued to mentor and inspire Early Childhood educators.
