KU Sector Capacity Building Program

KU has been funded by the NSW Department of Education, as part of the Disability and Inclusion Program, to support community preschool educators to implement and improve inclusive practice.

Objectives of the Program

KU has been funded by the NSW Department of Education, as part of the Disability and Inclusion Program, to support educators in NSW government funded community preschools in the following regions:

  • Central Coast
  • Illawarra Shoalhaven
  • Murrumbidgee
  • Sydney South East
  • Western Sydney
  • Nepean Blue Mountains
  • Northern Sydney
  • Sydney

The key objectives of the Sector Capacity Building Program are to:

  • Increase educators’ capacity to include children with disabilities and additional needs on the same basis as their peers.
  • Increase educators’ capacity to provide specialised transition to school supports for children with disability and additional needs.
  • Enable equitable education outcomes for children with disability and additional needs consistent with the five outcome areas of the Early Years Learning Framework (Identity, Connectedness, Wellbeing, Confident and Involved Learners, Communication).
  • Support educators to understand the external support options for children with disability and additional needs, and how these supports can be used to complement the preschool program.

Support provided by KU Sector Capacity Building Program

  • Tailored professional development designed to increase educator skills and confidence to ensure preschools are inclusion ready.
  • Face to face visits & online support from Preschool Inclusion Consultants who are experienced early childhood teachers to critically reflect with educators to continue to improve inclusive practice in line with the preschool’s Quality Improvement Plan or Self Assessment Tool.
  • Opportunities to increase confidence and practical skills across preschool teams through resource sharing, coaching and mentoring.
  • Proactive, guided planning to increase educator capacity to address any barriers to inclusion preschools may be facing.
  • Networking opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Access to current information about disability inclusion-related programs and services in the community, as well as inclusion resources and strategies.

Preschools in the eight regions supported by KU Sector Capacity Building Program have access to login to the Inclusion Gateway website.
