About this service

Our program and approach

When children play and explore, their imagination and curiosity are sparked – they enjoy learning, and are inspired to continue learning more.

Our play-based program intentionally provides a wide range of engaging opportunities and activities based on the Early Years Learning Framework.

We specialise in building secure relationships with each child to foster self-esteem and confidence. Our practices and training support inclusion, enabling educators to be emotionally available and predictable. This helps every child to feel valued and supported throughout preschool.

Director

Gianna Black is a university qualified Early Childhood Teacher with over 30 years’ experience working with KU. She joined KU John J. Carroll in 2017.

Gianna is a Marte Meo Supervisor and Facilitator in the Circle of Security Parenting Program. Both programs have strongly informed Gianna in supporting each child’s social and emotional wellbeing within the program. Gianna works closely with educators and families to apply these programs’ principles at the preschool and home.

Gianna believes it is important to allow each child to develop their own inner capacities within an environment that meets their emotional and relationship needs, allowing them to have the opportunity to resource their own learning independently or with others.

Family testimonials

KU John J. Carroll parent
“Lovely meet and greet at the start and end of the day. The children seem very emotionally regulated at the end of the day, too. I love the autonomy the kids get with mealtimes and jobs. I have loved our time at this service. The staff are excellent.”

KU John J. Carroll parent
“The educators all know us by name and greet us warmly each day we attend. They show genuine interest in us as people and as a family, e.g. they knew when it was my son’s birthday, asked how our holiday was when we returned from overseas, etc. This is different to the daycare that he has been attending for two and a half years, where they don’t really know us or say much aside from hello and goodbye.”

KU John J. Carroll parent
“The entire team are fantastic. The ethos and experience and love they have for the kids is wonderful.”

What an incredible preschool KU surry hills is. All the teachers are so kind and caring. My son hugs them as he leaves. He asks to go every day. I can see they teach the children independence and kindness. It’s an absolute gem of a school, we are so lucky to have found it.
