KU West Pymble Preschool has won the 2023 Better Business Partnership Award in the Childcare and Early Learning category.

Katrina Hendry, Director at KU West Pymble, was presented with the award by Jeff Pettett, Mayor of Ku-ring-gai Council, at an awards ceremony held on Thursday 8 June.

The Better Business Partnership program supports businesses in the North Sydney, Willoughby and Ku-ring-gai Council areas on their sustainability journey.

“We’re incredibly proud and grateful to have received this award – it reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire preschool community in promoting sustainable practices,” said KU West Pymble Director, Katrina Hendry.

The preschool won the award for embedding a wide range of sustainability initiatives within their preschool community over the years around the areas of renewable energy and energy reduction, waste diversion, water conservation and circular purchasing decisions.

“We embed sustainable practices in all that we do, and we support a respect for our environment and its future. We recognise that early childhood is a critical time for exploring and developing an understanding of lifelong sustainable practise and awareness,” said Katrina.

KU West Pymble was also recognised for their efforts in reducing plastic and avoiding the use of single use plastics.

“We conducted an audit of soft plastics and developed an activity to help the children identify and sort through them. We also created an educational campaign to inform families about reducing plastics in lunch boxes and undertook a review of the use of single use plastics in all events and celebrations,” said Katrina.

“With the introduction of the NSW single use plastics ban, we took part in the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s reduction program with our preschool becoming a collection point to recycle banned single use plastics.”

KU West Pymble provides high quality early childhood education for children aged 3 – 5 years old and is currently taking enrolments. For more information visit KU West Pymble Preschool.
