The children at The Joey Club – Sydney have been visited by a very special guest – Qantas CEO, Alan Joyce.

Mr Joyce visited the centre on Friday 30 June after hearing about the children’s project on recycling coffee cups for World Environment Day.

“The children collected and used 393 disposable coffee cups to create a giant ‘coffee cup’ sculpture to raise awareness within the Qantas community that coffee cups are not recyclable and to encourage the use of reusable coffee mugs,” said early childhood teacher, Shalini Jayram.

The children had the opportunity to discuss with Mr Joyce their thoughts and ideas about how they could encourage the recycling of even more coffee cups at Qantas, with children and staff being assured that changes to current signage on recycling bins are in the process of being amended and that the children’s requests for separate bins for coffee cups is being seriously considered.

After finding out it was Mr Joyce’s birthday, the children couldn’t resist the opportunity to offer him some cake and sing him Happy Birthday.
